MUTAFOV, Alexander Nakov Mutafov (9.V.1879-1957). Born in Shumen. His parents moved to Varna and here, by the sea, the childhood of the future artist took place, a peak in the Bulgarian plastic marine art. Student of Anton Mitov in the Varna High School and of Nikolay Pavlovich in Sofia. Later he studied at the Art Academy in Turin (1899-1902) under Prof. Grosso and at the Academy in Munich under Prof. von Löftz. He held his first exhibition after his return to Bulgaria. He was a teacher in Dupnitsa, in Sofia, and from 1921 a professor at the Academy of Arts. After that, he devoted himself entirely to painting. Winner of the State Prize for Painting in 1937 for “Fisherman” and a silver medal from the Paris Exhibition of the year for “The Blue Boat”. He held 15 solo exhibitions, participated in all the art exhibitions of the “Contemporary Art” society, the “Native Art” society, and the SBH.
